Tulum Mayan ruins

Tulum is an ancient city on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, home to the Mayan ruins that have stood since the city’s heyday in the late 13th century. The city was believed to be founded as a trading post but soon flourished as an important centre of Mayan culture and architecture. As such, its buildings and monuments are an important source of insight into Mayan history, architecture, art, and spirituality.

Visitors to Tulum can marvel at the stunning ruins and explore the region’s culture. The Tulum Ruins are an essential source of knowledge about Mayan history, religion, and culture. You can learn about the Mayan math, writing, calendar systems, and the unique rituals and ceremonies that were important to the Mayans.

The area around Tulum is home to several cenotes or natural freshwater swimming holes. These cenotes are sacred sites for the Mayans and offer visitors a unique chance to explore their surroundings.

Tulum city

Tulum is a city that has something to offer everyone. With its beautiful ruins, stunning beaches, and culturally-rich atmosphere, it’s no wonder it has become one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations.

The local cuisine in Tulum reflects the area’s traditional Mayan recipes, with dishes such as cochinita pibil and panuchos. The site also has chic boutiques and excellent bars and restaurants.

Tulum is also a popular spot for beachgoers. The city has numerous white-sand beaches, beach clubs and restaurants. Visitors can snorkel, sunbathe, swim in the clear waters of the Caribbean, and explore the nearby national parks.

Another activity you can do is to visit the local cenotes through a tour agency or by yourself. Many cenotes are around the area, so please check your options before starting this adventure. If you are a diver, this adventure option is also available.

You can also visit the jungle. For example, tour agencies offer some activities where you can see Tulum’s jungle with different thematics, go with a jeep or scooter, and even try zip line activities, where you uniquely cross the wilderness.

How to get around Tulum

You can get to Tulum’s ruins or the downtown in many ways. Some options are the following:

You can rent a car and visit the ancient ruins or the city. The advantage here is that you can decide when all this happens and move freely to explore the city or the places you want to visit. However, consider that you must have a driving licence and be prepared to drive on the highway. Fortunately, if you are staying in Cancun or Playa Del Carmen, there is no way to get lost since once you take the route, you only drive straightforwardly toward Tulum.

Another option is to get a bus to Tulum City. Those can be taken from Cancun’s popular ADO bus terminal or Playa del Carmen. This will take about 45-30 min to take you to the city and from there you can take a taxi and go to the ancient town – remember to bring cash with you. Nevertheless, please keep in mind that you need to have a more flexible schedule due to the departure time of the buses in the ADO terminal when you go and return. But, the overall experience would be spectacular since you will have the opportunity to walk and know more a bit closer to the main areas of Tulum.

Finally, another alternative is to get an all-inclusive trip to Tulum. The trips may include transportation, lunch and time in the city. Sometimes, those trips include visiting some local Cenote or other extra activities. It will depend on the tour you book. In this case, you only need to be on time for your pickup and follow the tour guide’s instructions to be on time for all your activities. You can be sure you will enjoy the complete experience without overwhelming yourself with many things to consider. This is preferable if you are a family or a group; it will ease things.
